Philosophy

Music is a powerful art form.  It has the ability to express what words alone sometimes cannot.  Through my teaching, I emphasize this aspect of music, focusing not only on the notes on the page, but on musicality – the elements which transcend notation.  I see my role as fostering development in these students, not just as musicians, but as people.  My students and I discuss how to overcome obstacles, the value of dedication, the importance of creativity, and the courage required to share our music with others through performance.  Rather than just mimicking what I say or do, I want them to be independent, coming up with their own ideas and being individual. I know that as I assist students in their pianistic endeavors, I will learn, too, and we will enjoy growing together.

The beauty of learning is discovery.  It is so rewarding to witness students’ excitement as their minds hunger for knowledge.  As a teacher, I aim to feed that hunger as they enthusiastically delve into music study.  Of course, progress can only happen through diligent and mindful practice and application.  My goal is to set high expectations for commitment to the instrument without allowing the passion to fade.  When I think about some of the best teachers I have had, I remember their cunning interpersonal skills, their ability to communicate effectively, and their adaptability.  I remember how these pedagogues challenged and pushed me and how they were committed to helping me reach my full potential. These are the qualities I wish to emulate as a piano teacher.

I want my students to be versatile, experienced in improvisation, collaborative piano, various styles of music, as well as the basics of reading pitches, rhythm, and other musical notations.  I, too, want to be versatile, able to teach students of all backgrounds.  Music brings us community, encourages us to be patient, requires that we listen intently, and benefits our minds and souls.  It is my joy and privilege to share in the music making as a piano teacher.

Testimonials

"Joseph created a welcoming and encouraging environment for our son to learn and thrive.  We appreciated his patience, positivity, and constant encouragement.  He is also an incredible player himself, and served as the perfect role model.  Our son had the privilege of working with Joseph for over a year.  He helped him establish a strong foundation that is so necessary with any new skill.  Anyone who has the chance to work with him will soon find themselves doing more than they thought possible."

"I think that [Joseph] is a very good teacher.  He taught me a lot about piano. I think my favorite part of lessons with him was playing new and old songs, especially new songs.  He also had a dash of humor (he was funny) along the way, I thought that was pretty fun."

-Former student (age 9)

"Joseph is one of the most attentive and patient instructors I have ever witnessed.  He has a natural gift for understanding the learning challenges as seen from the perspective of the student.  Joseph instructed our child, who had no prior experience with piano, from the very beginning and gracefully guided him through the frustrations of learning a new instrument.  Joseph taught the fundamentals and the importance of technique.  But he also stressed the importance of being both technically and emotionally involved in the music.  And he made all of this accessible through his levity and easy-going personality.  By providing this introduction to piano, our child has not only advanced as a piano player significantly, but he has also gained an appreciation for the piano and music in general as well as a desire to continue learning more.
